Lesson 05 · Your starting line
Same technology, three different first steps.
A shop with one hero product, a startup with a prototype and a company with thousands of staff should not start XR in the same place. Here is where it helps each, what the evidence says, a first month and the mistake we see most.
Don’t buy headsets. Put one great 3D moment on the phones your customers already hold.
For a small business, XR is a sales and storytelling tool, not an IT project. The win is usually one product a customer can see in their own room, or one moment at a fair that people remember.
Where it helps
- Product in the roomYour best-seller as a 3D model on the product page, viewable in AR.
- QR on packaging or menusA WebAR scene from a code: how it's made, how to use it, a dish on the table.
- One booth momentA thirty-second game or photo moment at a fair, with a QR to take home.
What the numbers say
- 40%higher order conversion for a small pet-crate maker after adding 3D and AR, with 5% fewer returnsShopify, Apr 2023 ↗
- 44%more likely to add to cart: shoppers who interacted with a fashion brand's products in 3DShopify, Apr 2023 ↗
The first 30 days
- 1
Week 1 · Pick one product
The one customers most often ask about, or return because it wasn't what they pictured.
- 2
Week 2 · Make it 3D
Scan or model it once; that file is the asset you own and reuse everywhere.
- 3
Week 3 · Put it behind a link
On the product page, in LINE, on a QR card at the counter.
- 4
Week 4 · Count
Opens, time spent, questions saved, sales of that product against last month.
The common mistake
Building an app nobody downloads
An AR app asks customers to install something for one look. Start in the browser, where a link is enough, and move to an app only when people keep coming back.
Build for the screen people have, and keep your code when platforms move.
For a startup, XR is either the product or a way to show one. The risks are building for a device too few people own, and depending on a platform that changes its terms.
Where it helps
- Demo the invisibleShow investors a product, a space or data in 3D before it exists.
- Launch on a social cameraA Lens or filter reaches millions for little build effort; you rent the audience.
- Bet on glasses, carefullyGlasses are the growth segment; prototype there, but keep a phone version.
What the numbers say
- 35.3%growth in XR units in Q2 2026, led by glassesIDC, Sep 2026 ↗
The first 30 days
- 1
Week 1 · Name the device
Who, exactly, owns the device you're building for? Count them.
- 2
Week 2 · Prototype on the web
A WebXR or WebAR test, shared as a link, to see if anyone cares.
- 3
Week 3 · Watch ten people
In person. Where they get stuck is your roadmap.
- 4
Week 4 · Decide the platform
Only now pick an engine or store, and keep your assets portable.
The common mistake
Building on a platform you can't leave
Hosted XR platforms do close: one well-known WebAR service shut its hosted editor in 2026. Keep your 3D assets and source code in your own hands.
Start where mistakes are expensive and practice is hard to arrange.
In a large organisation, the clearest XR returns are in training and in hands-busy work, where results can be counted. The hard part is not the headset; it's devices, IT, content and measurement at scale.
Where it helps
- Rare or risky trainingRushes, emergencies, equipment you can't take offline.
- Hands-free instructionsAssembly, inspection and maintenance steps shown on the work itself.
- Design and space reviewWalk a store, plant or building at full scale before it's built.
What the numbers say
- 99%less time, at most, spent working out the next assembly step with holographic instructionsComputerworld, Jan 2021 ↗
The first 30 days
- 1
Week 1 · Pick one process
One task with a known error rate, time or training cost.
- 2
Week 2 · Bring IT in early
Device management, Wi-Fi, privacy review, hygiene and charging.
- 3
Week 3 · Pilot with a control group
Half train the usual way, half in XR, then a debrief for both.
- 4
Week 4 · Decide on evidence
Scale, change or stop, based on the number you chose in week one.
The common mistake
Buying devices before content
Headsets left in a cupboard are a familiar end to XR pilots. Decide the process, the content and the measure first; the hardware is the easy part.
Side by side
Three organisations, three different first steps.
From our own work
Built in weeks, played in thirty seconds.
- Installation · 2025Thailand Post × Augma PlaygroundThree kiosks for Thailand Post's cultural weekend at Talat Noi, Bangkok, in October 2025, built from scratch in three weeks: an arcade-style dance-pad game, a photo booth with illustrated animal characters, and a touch-screen experience, for kids, families and elderly visitors.
- Installation · 2025Grab Hot Deals StationA 30-second touch-screen game for Grab Thailand at Central World, built with Conxo Lab and inspired by the Grab app: players pick only the items at 80% off from a scrolling menu. Four deals made the leaderboard; the top score was twelve, over five hours live on 6 March 2025.
- AR · 2026AR HolospaceA browser AR app using the webcam: tracked hands wear holographic rings and can grab, move, scale, rotate and throw wireframe holograms over the room feed, including an exploded-view mode.
Wherever you start, start with one moment.
