K.A.R.A Digital Human
Holographic 3D digital human
K.A.R.A in human form: a 3D hologram drawn from 400,000 points of light with a faint wireframe, who breathes, blinks, follows you with her eyes, changes mood, takes dozens of poses and gestures, opens data panels above her hand, and dissolves back into K.A.R.A's sphere and out again.
GoalGive K.A.R.A a body people can stand in front of, while keeping her made of light and data.
The story
- The spark
K.A.R.A had a voice and a sphere. People kept asking what she would look like if she stood in the room.
- The idea
A hologram rather than a realistic face: a figure made of points of light, so she stays clearly a machine, and can turn back into her sphere at any moment.
- What we built
A browser scene that resamples a 3D model into 400,000 skinned points of light with a faint wireframe, rebuilds the model's skeleton so she can move, and drives her face, eyes and poses in real time, in blue, red or amber.
What it does
- Made of light
400,000 points sampled across her surface, each carrying the shading of the original texture, so her face, hair and the ribbing of her dress read in the dots. A hidden body pass stops you seeing through her.
- Alive when idle
She breathes, shifts her weight, sways her arms, blinks and glances on her own, and her eyes and head follow your pointer.
- A face that moves
Lids, brows, mouth corners and jaw are moved directly on the points, for neutral, happy, concerned and thinking moods, and a speaking rhythm with captions.
- Poses and gestures
Dozens of poses, from presenting and pointing to sitting with a tablet or working at a screen, plus one-off gestures such as a wave, a bow, a nod or a shrug. An auto mode cycles through them.
- Data in her hand
She raises a hand, palm up, and a holographic panel opens above it with a figure, a chart and ranked rows, the way she would present a briefing.
- Sphere to human and back
Her sphere from this site dissolves into particles that burst outward, then gather into her body, head first, under a cover of drifting data; it runs the same way in reverse. She can also dissolve or vanish behind a rising scan line.
- Three colourways
Blue by default, red, and amber for alerts; her colour can follow her mood.
